Here is what I think happens during a music performance:
Before the performance:
-A composer has an idea in their head which they attempt to communicate to the performer via lines and dots on a page.
-A performer looks at the lines and dots and forms an idea based on them.
During the performance:
-The performer has an idea in their head which they attempt to communicate to the audience via vibrating air molecules.
-The audience receives vibrations and interprets them.
Sometimes the composer and performer will be the same person. Sometimes, all three roles are played by the same person.
Sometimes the composer will attempt to control the performer to a greater or lesser extent. Sometimes the performer will attempt to control the audience to a greater or lesser extent. The effectiveness of either of these attempted actions is determined in the moment.
I’m trying out this kind of minimalism and welcome thoughts.
