I am very excited about a project I have started and will be embarking on throughout the next year (and perhaps longer). A friend of mine, John Kammerer, and I have designed an installational, improvisatory electro-acoustic event. We call it abstraction.
In each installation, I interpret a work of literature while John uses a Max/MSP program to process my sounds in real time. The program John uses is massive and capable of a huge variety of effects so the output is completely different each time we do it.
This is not only an exploration in electro-acoustic performance but also in improvisation. I will be discovering ways of translating the messages I find in written word into musical sound and John will be discovering new noises all in real time. It is also a true collaboration between flute and computer. Often there are works written for “solo flute with electronics” but in abstraction the two serve equal roles.
